Peristyle Side of
Prospect Park Lake

I revisited this spot on the edge of Prospect Park Lake in Brooklyn, NY after having painted a smaller version in 2020 during a workshop with the artist, Diana Buitrago. This spot is not far from the Peristyle designed by Stanford White in 1905. That beautiful structure attracts wedding parties and other special events after which people usually stroll over to the lake for some respite at this spot where—like this tree—bears witness to uncountable park visitors and city dwellers.

I painted this in the summer while visiting and painting together with my friend, the artist Elena Gladkova, in the Finger Lakes Region of New York. The hillside views from her home are stunning. I felt sheer joy while painting far from the big city, breathing the fresh air, caressed by gentle breezes, and enjoying lovely conversation.

I'll See to My Delight

This is my fifth cast drawing, which took me over a year to complete, dedicating about three hours every Sunday to rendering the form with a very sharp pencil. Essentially it rewired my brain and sharpened my visual perception. Cast drawings are considered rigorous academic exercises. For me it was a delightful practice of being fully present, maintaining a very strong main consciousness. I often listened to the countertenor, Jakub Józef Orliński sing the aria “Vedrò con mio diletto” (Act 1) from Antonio Vivaldi’s opera Il Giustino (RV 717) while drawing, hence the title is a translation of that beautiful aria.
